If the Lake District is on your ‘must see’ agenda (and it should be) you’ll need to choose the type of accommodation for your stay. I wouldn’t put you off staying in a hotel if you were looking for a short stay of one or two nights and needed all the facilities that a hotel can offer, but for longer stays, lake district cottages are hard to beat.
